  • Great American Solar Eclipse

    Date: August 21, 2017

    Time: 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Location: Putnam Museum GIANT Screen Theater

Did you know that on average, any given spot on Earth’s surface will go for several centuries without seeing a total eclipse?

The rare occurrence of a total eclipse will take place on August 21 – when part of the United States will fall under the path of a total solar eclipse.  People across the United States will see the sun disappear behind the moon, turning daylight into twilight and revealing massive streamers of light streaking through the sky around the silhouette of the moon.

To make this rare occurrence an unforgettable one, the Putnam Museum & Science Center will be live streaming the solar eclipse on our GIANT screen during a FREE event!

Viewers will be able to safely view the total eclipse, which will be simulcast from Aurora, Nebraska (the second longest full eclipse duration point in the U.S.), while also learning about an eclipse from experts from the Quad City Astronomical Society.

During the event, experts will provide explanations of what is going on and what it means to the increasing body of knowledge about the sun and its atmosphere.

At the same time, a viewing area will be available outside the Putnam for viewers to witness the partial, but almost total, eclipse.**

**Please note: it is never safe to look directly at the sun's rays – even if the sun is partly obscured during an eclipse. When watching an eclipse you must wear eclipse glasses at all times if you want to face the sun. All participants will need to sign a waiver before watching the eclipse from the outdoor viewing location.

To reserve a spot in the theater for this free event or for questions and more information, contact the Putnam at 563-324-1933.
