The Putnam Museum opened its 3D IMAX Theatre on March 16, 2002, and was the only 3D theatre in the state of Iowa. IMAX-goers have traveled from the ocean's depths to the surface of the moon; have scaled Everest and been up close and personal with wild chimpanzees; have raced at NASCAR-breakneck speeds and in an F-15 Eagle; and have soared with both Superman and Michael Jordan. More than 50 IMAX films later, the Putnam's IMAX continues to be the ultimate movie experience.
The Putnam's IMAX® features a giant screen six stories tall and seven stories wide; 10,000 watt digital surround sound; and is the most technologically advanced projection system in the world. It has 270 sloped, stadium-style seats and offers both 2D and 3D IMAX presentations. It was voted Best Movie Theatre in local polls.
